If you find a bat on the ground, on an outside wall, or in an exposed area where it may be vulnerable PLEASE DONT ASSUME THE BAT IS HEALTHY AND LEAVE IT OUTSIDE TO FLY AWAY.
Instead please safely contain the bat in a small, secure container or box with air holes and water by following these instructions.
Once the bat is safely contained follow the steps below.
Please take the bat immediately to your local vet. If you think a cat attacked the bat it will require immediate antibiotics, even a tiny amount of cat saliva in a bat’s bloodstream can cause infection and without help they are likely to die within hours. Your vet may follow these instructions on bat handling, medication doses etc for bats. In the case of wing breaks, unfortunately, the bat may have to be put to sleep.
If the bat recovers or is otherwise OK, please attempt to release the bat following these instructions.
Please attempt to release the bat following these instructions.
If the bat flies away safely, your work is done!
If you have tried releasing the bat and it will not fly, it may need specialist care, please fill in your details and we will try to find a local bat "ambulance driver" who will pass the bat onto a carer.
